Human presence has left traces in the Imotski region from its beginnings to the present day. Prehistoric mounds, Illyrian fortresses, Roman remains, old Croatian churches, stećci (medieval tombstones), Ottoman wells, and rural complexes are silent witnesses to continuous habitation in this karst area.
Nowhere do these traces intertwine as intensely as at the archaeological site of Crkvine in Cista Velika. Alongside finds of prehistoric pottery, on the remains of an unknown Roman building, the first Christians built their churches, which perished at the end of antiquity. The newly settled Croats built their churches on these foundations.
Byzantine Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus mentioned that the Croatian Principality was divided into eleven counties. One of them was the Imotski County. In the 11th century, an unknown Croatian woman lived there. She left her earrings in her grave at Crkvine.
In addition to its rich history, the Imotski region boasts natural beauties such as the Blue and Red Lakes, unique karst phenomena. The stunning landscapes and untouched nature make this area ideal for adventure tourism enthusiasts.
